I ... entered the poem of life, whose purpose is ... simply to witness the beauties of the world, to discover the many forms that love can take. (Barabara Blackman in 'Glass After Glass')

The Visitors

Slowly, they come slowly into the light
one by one, hesitant to show themselves,
keeping their faces hidden till the last,
but then, when finally … they shine, they blaze!

Who could have guessed such beauty, this bright grace
that now displays itself to all who cast
their eyes upwards to where the figures stand,
half avoiding, half inviting our gaze?

They are silent however, day and night,
during the season of their presence here,
suggesting their message is their appearance,
that in itself sufficient to amaze.

And then, suddenly, all of them take flight
and our miraculous present is past.

  1. intriguing vignette rosemary...i like that you keep it open ended...it could be much of anyone visiting...i have obviously been watching too much sci fi and immediately thought of aliens...ha...

  2. There is much below the surface of this poem, Rosemary. I would like to know who 'they' are. But it is good to keep the reader speculating.

  3. I enjoyed wrestling with the ambiguity in this, Rosemary. Are 'they' ghosts? Fairies? Or, more deeper - memories? Food for thought - thank you. - OneVoicePoetry, per Vivienne (one of the 6)

  4. i was thinking in all kinds of different directions while reading... and i too like that you leave it open for the reader to interpret and read into it whatever it means to them - and i guess for each it is something different
